My friends at Mali Mish just visited a super cool vintage trailer hotel that I had never heard of. I had to investigate. El Cosmico is a one of a kind vintage trailer hotel and campground on 18 acres in Marfa, Texas. Where is Marfa, Texas you ask? Well, it’s a few hundred miles west of Austin. Just love to see these unique hotels popping up all over the world. And for El Cosmico, you can enjoy not only big blue skies and billowing clouds but, a restful stop in the middle of Texas and an experience most could only wish for.
“El Cosmico is part vintage trailer, safari tent and teepee hotel and campground, part creative lab, greenhouse and amphitheatre – a community space that fosters and agitates artistic and intellectual exchange.”
Trailers include: 1956 IMPERIAL MANSION, 1953 VAGABOND , 1951 ROYAL MANSION, 1949 SPARTAN MANSION, 1951 KOZY COACH, 1950 BRANSTRATOR and an 18′ LITTLE PINKY. All trailers come complete with bedding, towels, all kitchen needs, hot water, floor heating, fans, fridge and stove.
Additional amenities:
Bath House: our bath house features showers, tub, toilets, sinks and a few electrical outlets. Camping doesn’t have to be dirty.
Hammock Grove: relax.
Internet: wireless internet is available in our lobby lounge
Kitchen: shared outdoor kitchen onsite with fridge, bar-b-cues and picnic tables for guests.

Bowlus Road Chief Reply
The announcement of the new 2013 Bowlus Road Chief has spread like wildfire over the internet. Many of my fellow Airstream bloggers have already shared this unique story! I felt the need to also share its sleek lines, fine interior craftsmanship and easy towability with my Glampers. A bit of history: In 1926 Hawley Bowlus built Charles Lindbergh’s airplane, “Spirit of St. Louis”. In 1934 he introduced and produced only 80 Bowlus Road Chief travel trailers before going back to building aircraft. Todays Bowlus is longer, taller and wider than the originals. And at only 2,000 lbs it can be towed by virtually any vehicle. The Bowlus is a classic American travel trailer worth taking a look at. The Bowlus is indeed “rolling art“!
“Way back in 1934, Hawley Bowlus, the inventor of the original Bowlus Road Chief, knew that the best way to build a light and strong travel trailer was to emulate aircraft design. He took aircraft-grade aluminum sheets and riveted them together over a lightweight skeleton to form a single, tight, and incredibly durable monocoque structure.” More history and photos can be found on the Bowlus website.
My friends at Mali Mish shared this link with me this morning. The restored 1935 Bowlus owned by John Long. It’s restored to perfection. A must see!

The Business of Fun 8
This past weekend in Denver, the annual SIA Convention (SnowSports Industries America) was in town! My niece, Meg Haywood-Sullivan is an award-winning snowboard photographer and was in attendance of the festivities. We visited with Meg downtown Denver on Saturday night and lo and behold, what do my eyes see but, an Airstream! Didn’t have my camera handy so drove down the next morning to get a couple of shots of this decked out ‘Stream. Come to find out it’s the Airstream for “The Business of Fun, Keeping Kids Out of Cubicles“. After reading a bit about this organization, it’s worth a read for sure. “The Business of Fun is dedicated to helping people turn their passions into their jobs through events and our online community. Happy people with good jobs make a better world…” Love their motto!!
